Summery:
Amanda, 37 year old gorilla from Woodland Park Zoo, gave a birth to a baby gorilla in Saturday at about 3-30 a.m. According to the veterinarian of animal health Dr. Ochsenreiter, the first 72 hours of gorilla’s life is the most critical, thus the newborn gorilla remains under 24- hour observation. The baby is doing well, and her mother Amanda is taking care of her. This baby is the 12th successfully born gorilla and third conceived by the 37-year-old mother and the 28-year-old father in the Woodland Park Zoo.According to this article, the baby is very important because of its genetic diversity. Its mother Amanda was born in the wild, and father has only two other relatives outside of Woodland Park Zoo. Those factors make the baby gorilla's genes particularly valuable to the zoo population in North America.
Personal Response:
It’s very good that the number of gorillas is increasing. I think, we need to take care of them in order to save them, because there are a lot of hunters who kill gorillas to sell them for a big amount of money. If it will continue longer, we will never see this kind of animal again. We should give gorillas better conditions to live, so they could live longer and make more kids.
